The Matcha Movement: Why Quality Matters, and How to Bring It to Your Event

Over the past few years, matcha has gone from a niche specialty drink to something you can find almost everywhere, and the numbers show just how fast that shift has happened.

Why Everyone Is Falling for Matcha

Matcha isn't just a healthy choice; it's an incredibly versatile ingredient. It pairs beautifully with citrus, shines in cocktails, and makes lattes that feel both indulgent and energizing. Today it even appears in pastries and desserts, and mixologists are using it in matcha martinis, margaritas, and other craft cocktails. That range is exactly what makes it such a smart bet for any business: a well-crafted matcha drink can easily become your signature.

More Than Caffeine

Matcha gives you caffeine for energy, but it also contains L-theanine, an amino acid associated with calm, focused alertness, plus a rich dose of antioxidants. It's energy that feels balanced, not jittery.

The Problem: A Trend Without Education

Here's where things get complicated. As demand explodes, education hasn't kept pace. Many businesses take advantage of the hype and serve low-quality, heavily processed powder. Finding truly good matcha has become harder and harder.

And one thing I've learned along the way: matcha isn't "ceremonial" just because a label says so. It's about how it's grown, prepared, served, and how it feels when you drink it.

A Trend Backed by Numbers

According to Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, matcha production reached 4,176 tons in 2023, nearly three times the volume recorded in 2010. Even so, supply hasn't kept up. In May 2025, a tencha auction in Kyoto hit ยฅ8,235 per kilo, a 170% jump from the year before and well above the previous record set in 2016. Demand abroad keeps climbing too: Japan's green tea exports reached 13,125 metric tons in fiscal 2025, up 42%, while their value doubled, with powdered tea making up about 70% of the volume.

Businesses have noticed. Menu mentions of matcha grew 46% over four years, according to Datassential, and matcha menu items rose about 30% year over year, with social media mentions more than doubling. Consumers are actively looking for it: Yelp reported that searches for "matcha powder" rose 791% versus the prior year. Industry estimates put the global matcha market at roughly $3.67 billion in 2025, projected to reach $5.35 billion by 2031.

Our Approach: A Matcha Bar Worth Remembering

At Beeyounique, we offer premium matcha bars for events, with specialty drinks custom-designed around your event's theme. We're also proud ambassadors of Rebel Bunny, a brand offering high-quality matchas in a range of types, flavors, and Japanese origins. Each one brings out different notes depending on the recipe, so every drink on our menu is paired with the matcha that makes it shine.

But we don't just want to ride the trend. We want to help people understand it, the same way I've been learning: with respect for how matcha is produced, the craft behind it, and the ritual of serving it well.
